Koh Samui Welcomed Mein Schiff 5 Cruise Ship in 2022

In December 2022, authorities in Thailand's southern province of Surat Thani kept a positive outlook on the recovering tourism sector as another cruise ship arrived near Koh Samui island. While the industry was gradually rebounding from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the government urged businesses to uphold the country's good reputation.

According to the Pattaya Mail, a total of 31 cruise ships were scheduled to visit Koh Samui in 2023, with an additional 32 expected in 2024.

Nearly 2,500 European visitors for one day

The arrival of the Mein Schiff 5 cruise liner brought joy to Thailand's Prime Minister, Prayut Chan-o-cha, as Koh Samui prepared to welcome nearly 2,500 European travellers for a one-day visit.

The vessel was only the second European cruise ship to visit the island in the previous three years, because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Higher arrival forecasts and a warning to operators

Authorities projected that the number of international visitors to Thailand would be higher than the forecasts of the time, as the world gradually returned to normal after the pandemic. Travel had been significantly restricted by the strict virus containment measures applied worldwide.

Prayut also warned against any exploitation of tourists. He urged all stakeholders to maintain stringent policies so that travellers would not be taken advantage of by taxi drivers and tourism operators.

In addition, he reportedly instructed the authorities to impose severe penalties if such practices were discovered, in order to protect the country's reputation in the tourism sector.
